Two years ago senior staff at St. Bartholomew’s considered how they could encourage their people to open up the Book of Common Prayer at home. The fruit of that conversation was to offer Compline during Advent on Facebook Live. The practice has become not only a welcome respite during a hectic season, but also a place of connection for a geographically dispersed church community.
Facebook certainly has its fair share of woes, so as a team, we love that Compline-Live offers some redemption to the social giant. It has become for us an avenue of Christian formation and prayer book spirituality. Through the platform we are able to carve out sacred space in the midst of posts, pictures, articles, and other social media busyness. We also love that creating this quiet and reflective space is countercultural, especially at this time of year. The nature of Facebook-Live allows those who are not quite ready at 9 p.m. to still join in the prayers at whatever time works best for them. Our people can skip the traffic, practice opening their prayer books with others, and create sacred space right at home.
Although this was created for the St. B’s family, we are realizing that perhaps others around the Diocese would like to join our Advent prayers and weave ten minutes of calm into the end of the day. Compline-live happens Sunday through Friday at 9 p.m. on the St. B’s Facebook page and we welcome anyone to pray with us.
